South-West France and the Basque Country

When it works: September to November. The Landes coast from Capbreton to Lacanau is a 200-kilometre straight of sand facing the full North Atlantic. Summer is flat-ish and packed; autumn brings the first proper lows, offshore easterlies in the mornings and water still near 18–20 °C in early October. The Quiksilver Pro was held at Hossegor for years for exactly this reason.

Who it suits: Banks change with every storm. On a head-high day the Landes is an intermediate playground; at double overhead, La Gravière becomes one of Europe's heaviest beach breaks. Beginners should stick to supervised beaches and small days, ideally in September.

Across the border, the Spanish Basque coast trades sand for rock. Mundaka's famous left peels down a sandbar at the mouth of the Urdaibai estuary, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and needs a big north-west swell and the right tide. When it fires, the lineup is crowded and the locals get priority. Zarautz and San Sebastián's Zurriola are the honest choices for mixed-ability groups.

Portugal: Ericeira, Peniche and Nazaré

When it works: October to March. Portugal catches swell that misses Biscay, and its coastline bends enough that something is usually offshore. Ericeira was declared a World Surfing Reserve in 2011, with a dense cluster of reefs including Ribeira d'Ilhas, Coxos and Pedra Branca. Peniche's peninsula lets you pick a side depending on wind; Supertubos south of town is a powerful sand barrel that hosts the Championship Tour.

Who it suits: Coxos and Supertubos are advanced. Foz do Lizandro, Baleal and the surf-school beaches around Peniche suit beginners. Water hovers around 14–16 °C in winter: a 4/3 is standard.

Nazaré is a spectator stop for almost everyone. Praia do Norte's submarine canyon focuses swell into the giants towed by big-wave specialists. Watch from the lighthouse at the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo and keep your board on the roof rack.

Morocco: Taghazout and the Southern Points

When it works: November to February. North Atlantic winter swells wrap into a string of right-hand points north of Agadir, protected from the prevailing north winds. Water stays around 17–19 °C, so a 3/2 is enough for most.

Who it suits: Anchor Point is a long, fast right over rock that needs size and commitment. Killer Point and Boilers sit further out and are for experienced surfers. Banana Point and the beaches at Tamraght and Imsouane's bay are where improvers log hundreds of waves. Further south, Safi's right-hand barrel is world class and strictly expert.

Logistics

Biarritz, Bilbao and Bordeaux airports serve the French and Basque coasts; a car is essential. Lisbon is 45 minutes from Ericeira and about 75 from Peniche. For Morocco, fly into Agadir; Taghazout is roughly 30 minutes north by taxi. Most travellers from the EU, UK and US enter Morocco visa-free for tourism stays, but check your own nationality's rules.
