Island Chains and Dry-Season Swell
From April to October, Southern Ocean storms send long-period groundswell north while trade winds blow offshore on south-west-facing reefs. That overlap is the whole reason to go.

Bali: Two Coasts, Two Seasons
When it works: April to October on the west and Bukit side, November to March on the east. Bali's appeal is that it has a surfable coast in every month. Dry-season trades blow offshore at Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin and Impossibles; in the wet season the wind swings and Keramas and Sanur's reefs take over.
Who it suits: Bali is the only Indo destination that genuinely works for beginners, thanks to Kuta Beach, Legian and the softer peaks at Canggu. The Bukit reefs are a different world: Padang Padang breaks over reef inches deep and should be left to experts. Uluwatu is manageable for strong intermediates on smaller days at mid to high tide.
Java, Sumbawa and Lombok
G-Land, in Alas Purwo National Park on Java's south-eastern tip, is a long left reef reached by road and boat from Banyuwangi or by transfer from Bali. Accommodation is in surf camps; bring everything you need. Lakey Peak on Sumbawa offers a rare A-frame with a forgiving right and a quicker left, and Desert Point on Lombok — a famously fickle left barrel — needs a solid swell and patience.
The Mentawai Islands
When it works: April to October, peaking June to August. Off West Sumatra, this chain holds a dense concentration of perfect reefs: Macaronis, HT's (Lance's Right), Rifles and more. Access is by fast ferry or speedboat from Padang, then either a land camp or a charter boat.
Who it suits: Confident intermediates and up. The waves are often less heavy than their reputation, but help is hours away. Many resorts and charters require evacuation insurance; check our insurance notes. The local regency charges a surf fee to visiting surfers — confirm current rules with your operator.
Fiji, Tahiti and the Philippines
Fiji's Mamanuca reefs sit about an hour by boat from Nadi. Cloudbreak and Restaurants were once exclusive to Tavarua's resort; since 2010 access has been opened to other operators. Teahupo'o on Tahiti's southern peninsula hosted the surfing at the Paris 2024 Olympics and is among the most dangerous waves in the world; most visitors watch from the channel boat.
Siargao in the Philippines runs on a different clock. Cloud 9's right is best from August to November, overlapping with typhoon season — book flexible.
Logistics
Indonesia offers visa-on-arrival for many nationalities, and Bali has introduced a tourist levy for foreign visitors; verify both before departure. Coral cuts infect quickly in warm water: pack antiseptic and reef booties. Rainy-season flights are cheaper but east-coast Bali is then your only reliable surf.
